Owning a home is a significant part of the American Dream for many. Think beautiful tree lined streets with white picket fences and friendly neighbors. Not too long ago, owning a single family home was something that would take years of hard work and sacrifice for a family. Thanks to loan programs like FHA, VA and the availability of credit, a large down payment is no longer necessary.
Advantages of a detached home is the autonomy it gives you. Your home is your castle and and you own a piece of land that you can do more or less what you want with. In some cases an active homeowner association will enforce covenants to make sure your neighbors don't set up a car repair shop in their front yard or paint their home yellow with red polka dots.
Disadvantages would be that all the maintenance would be the owners full responsibility. And, if you want to paint your home pink, or set up a car repair shop, the homeowner association or other local jurisdiction may prevent that (go with a non-HOA community if you want the outside of the home to represent your personality…)
